VULGO favourite, Jeanette Doyle is off on an awfully big adventure to the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, where she will be the first ever Irish artist to perform. Her show is called “Jeanette Doyle, Fifteen Days”, in what could perhaps be seen as her own homage to Andy’s notion of “fifteen seconds of fame”. There will be material and immaterial work, involving a cherry picker, a lightbulb, and an iconic portrait of Andy Warhol. And that’s not all, there will be visits to the offices of Ansaldo STS, a leading local technology company involved in traffic management, planning, train control, and signaling systems and services, where Jeanette will watch and record work processes – leading to another show in 2012 entitled “Factory Direct”. What’s more, from November 9 – 27th, #jeanettedoyle will be tweeting her updates on VULGO_ie’s twitter account! So tune in to follow the adventures of our girl in Pittsburgh.
VULGO enjoyed a quick chat with Jeanette Doyle as she packed her bags for her big show - listen here, and then watch out for her #jeanettedoyle tweet-updates on VULGO_ie:
VULGO Jeanette Doyle by Deirdre Mulrooney
“Fifteen Days is a preview of Doyle’s work for Factory Direct: Pittsburgh, an upcoming exhibition opening in June 2012. For a period of fifteen days, artist Jeanette Doyle will perform a dematerialized act at The Warhol. An extension of the performance will be rendered immaterially on The Warhol’s website. The project emerges from a consideration of the relationship between “dematerialized” artworks versus current definition of the “immaterial.” Each day from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Doyle will change the light bulbs illuminating the museum’s entrance gallery. After Doyle’s daily performances at The Warhol, she will then commute to the offices of Ansaldo STS, a leading local technology company involved in traffic management, planning, train control, and signaling systems and services, where she will watch and record work processes. While Doyle will be performing ‘immaterial’ labor at The Warhol, she will function as a viewer at Ansaldo; therefore reversing roles. Factory Direct: Pittsburgh showcases the artwork of 15 established contemporary artists invited to conduct artist residencies in Pittsburgh-based factories.”

We’ll catch up with Jeanette again here on VULGO when she gets home, to see if she has been transformed by the experience, or if the Andy Warhol Museum has been transformed by her! So, “Material” and “Dematerial” are our words for November – as we follow Jeanette Doyle’s actions and ponder their meaning… (send your answers as a virtual postcard please – below)
Bon voyage Jeanette
