INTERVIEW WITH LAURIE ANDERSON JANUARY 4th, 2011
Laurie: In her Canal Street Studio, New York
Deirdre & Angel: In PhotoIreland’s office, 64 Lower Mount Street, D2
4pm Dublin Time.
Deirdre: I was lucky enough to catch your last performance of Delusion in October.
Laurie: Where in New York?
D: Yes in BAM. I loved it, it was a real revelation. I was chatting to Joe Melillo, the Chief Executive of BAM, and he described yourself and Pina Bausch as two “legacy artists”.
L: Legacy! That sounds like something you’d find in a gated community – “legacy artists”! That’s very nice, that’s very kind of him. I mean I’m a big fan of Pina Bausch, I miss her a lot.
D: Well I’ve been working on her work for a long time, but I’m wondering how did you feel about being juxtaposed with Bausch’s show “Vollmond” for the opening of BAM Next Wave Festival?
L: feel lucky to be in New York now because there is a lot of stuff going on, and I often miss it because I am touring so much. So now there is a festival going on called “Under the Radar” – it’s an interesting festival it’s a little bit messier than what you might see at BAM, but it’s got great energy so I’m going to have a good time looking at it this month.
… & the conversation goes on… one thing more fascinating than the next….
